Kay lived in Viet-Nam 68-70 and was married to an Air America pilot Jon Christian Merkel who was KIA flying in Laos 18 Feb 70. She returned to Dallas a widow with PTSD. She retired after teaching 38 years at a girls’ school and now volunteers at teaching creative writing at the VA-Dallas Veterans Recovery Center.
